Frequently Asked Questions

Subscriptions FAQ

How do paid subscriptions work?

You may subscribe to this newsletter at the paid tiers on a monthly or annual basis. We frequently hold sales on subscriptions, for which you must be a new or otherwise non-active paid subscriber to be eligible (this is just how our payment processor works; see below re: sales and active subscriptions for more info).

When you pay for a period of time, whether a month or a year, it belongs to you (the exception is if you upgrade from a monthly subscription to an annual one; more on this in the relevant question below). No matter when you cancel, you will retain access for the period you paid for. This means there are no pro rata refunds for She's A Beast's services. After you cancel, your access will be automatically turned off once the period you paid for expires.

Can I unsubscribe/cancel my free subscription?

You not only may, but we take great pride in putting this power entirely in the hands of the user! No emails to me necessary. One method is the "Unsubscribe" link that exists at the bottom of every newsletter I send.

In addition, you may log in to shesabeast.co, click the "Account" button, and in the "Emails" box, click "Manage." At the bottom, click the big button that says "Unsubscribe from all emails." This will, as promised, instantly unsubscribe you from all She's A Beast emails.

Can I cancel my paid subscription?

Yes! She's A Beast Services, Systems, and Son takes great pride in providing a friction-free subscription management interface. This interface exists precisely to preclude the need to email me personally asking me to manually cancel your subscription. To cancel, please follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account at shesabeast.co
  2. Click on the Account button in the top right of the screen, and click 'Change' next to your subscription category (e.g. "Beasties Member, $10.00/month")
  3. Scroll to the bottom, and click "Cancel subscription." In the next window, click "confirm cancellation." (You will be provided with a text field to state why you are canceling, but filling it out is optional.)

You will retain access to the paid sections of the site for the duration of the period you paid for.

Because we strive to put control in the hands of the reader with this friction-free subscription management interface, we do not offer refunds, as this places undue administrative stress on our one-woman operation.

PLEASE NOTE: If you click 'Manage' next to your email preferences and switch some or all email delivery off, this does not cancel your paid subscription.

Likewise, canceling your paid subscription will not unsubscribe you from the free email. See "Can I unsubscribe/cancel my free subscription?" for managing your email preferences.

Do your subscriptions auto-renew? Will I receive a notice prior to being charged?

Without additional intervention from you, subscriptions auto-renew at the full rate ($10/month after your discount period runs out, or $100/year), whether you subscribed at a discount or not.

No, you will not receive a notice. (I have duly requested this feature from my platform, and they have yet to add it; please feel free to email them at support@ghost.org to express your support for it.) However, you may "pre-cancel" you subscription if you are concerned about auto-renewal, as described below.

If I cancel my subscription before the time I paid for runs out, will I retain access to the paid areas of the newsletter?

Yes. You can "pre-cancel" your subscription if you are concerned you will forget about the auto-renewal. You will retain access to the site through the paid period. However, you will not receive a notice about this event, either; you will simply stop receiving the paid-tier emails at that time and lose access to the paid sections of the site. See above at "Can I cancel my paid subscription?" for instructions on canceling your paid subscription.

Just curious, what is the Worst Possible Way to attempt to unsubscribe, whether I am a paid or free subscriber?

Replying to any email with just the word "unsubscribe." According to the terms of service of this site, we will never respond to this kind of terrorism. This is not the annual planning email for your fraternity's spring break trip to Cabo.

Given the tools we strive to equitably provide to our subscribers, as well as the eminently voluntary nature of email subscription, as well as our principled stance against engaging in any practices that would result in anyone being subscribed to an email they do not want, we consider this behavior a rude abdication of your duty as a responsible reader and consumer. You're free to do it, just expect to be ignored and/or receive a link to this FAQ.

I am being charged for a paid subscription, but when I log in, the site says I have only a free subscription, and/or I am not receiving the paid posts! What the hell

Your paid subscription is probably under a different email, and/or you are subscribed with two different emails (e.g. one email with a paid account that you may not be able to recall, and one email signed up to the free version). Or, you canceled your subscription at some point, and the paid time ran out.

Please check what email your paid tier posts (~5PM Sunday Ask A Swole Woman editions) are arriving at. Please be cognizant of aliases and + or . modifiers. That is the email tied to your paid subscription.

If you think your subscription may have run out, please follow these steps to check:

  1. Log in to your account at shesabeast.co
  2. Click on the Account button in the top right of the screen
  3. If you are no longer subscribed, it will say "You currently have a free membership" at the top of the box.
  4. If you wish to resubscribe, click the big "view plans" button. Choose the paid tier you would like to access!

If you are a paid subscriber but not receiving the paid posts, see the question below, "I am a paying subscriber, but think I am not receiving the paid emails!"

Can I switch from a monthly to an annual subscription, or vice versa?

Yes, you can. Note that if you switch to an annual subscription from a monthly, you will be immediately upgraded to an annual subscription, and your year of paid access will start on the date you upgrade. That means if you have time left in the month you already paid for, it will be lost; therefore, if this concerns you, consider waiting until your current paid month has nearly or totally run out before upgrading to an annual subscription.

If you switch from an annual to a monthly subscription, you will retain access to the site through the annual period for which you paid, and then will be charged monthly after that. (This is a good solution if you are concerned about losing track of annual auto-renewal, but wish to prevent gaps in service.)

Can I take advantage of a subscription sale if I have an existing paid subscription?

If you wish to take advantage of a subscription sale, you must not have paid access currently active on your account. If you are paid through a given period, the subscription must not only be cancelled, but have already expired and no longer be active. If your subscription does not expire during the sale period, you must wait for the next sale.

Can I give a subscription as a gift?

Unfortunately, no, but I wish! The best way to do this would be to give money some other way, earmarked for a subscription to your giftee. This is another feature I have requested from Ghost; please feel free to email them at support@ghost.org to express your interest for this feature.

Do you offer a student discount?

Students, educators, and under- or un-employed people can send me an email and request one of our earmarked comped subscriptions, good for one year.

Tech FAQ

How do I sign in to the website?

Go to shesabeast.co and click "Subscribe" in the top right or bottom right corner. When the subscription window pops up, scroll to the bottom and click the "Sign in" link. You will be invited to enter the email you used to subscribe. When you click "Continue," the site will send a magic login link to the email you entered.

I do not personally send these secure sign-in link emails; they are sent to you by Ghost when you attempt to sign in to shesabeast.co. Therefore, I cannot personally send you another one, even if you email me.

However, you can generate a new one all on your own! Per those emails, which look like this:

Those magic links, once generated, only work for 24 hours. If it's been more than 24 hours since the email was sent to you, you need to generate a new email by attempting to sign in again. Here's how:

  1. Click "Subscribe" on the homepage
  2. Click "Sign in" at the bottom
  3. Type your email
  4. Click continue

And new login email will be sent to you. If you do not click the link within 24 hours, it will expire again, and you will have to do this process again.

If you do not like doing this, I am unfortunately not the right person to contact about it. Email support@ghost.org and let them know!

I can't log in/I don't know my login/password!

This platform does not use usernames and passwords, per se. When you type the email you used to sign up for the newsletter into the sign-in box, the site will send a magic link to that email. When you click the magic link from that email, your browser will generate a cookie that will keep you logged in for a period of few months.

If you attempt to log in but don't receive the magic link within an hour, or you can't remember what email you used to subscribe, please email me at support@shesabeast.co and I will do my best to help you.

I am a free subscriber, but think I am not receiving any of the emails!

She's A Beast Limited Worldwide Inc. very strongly recommends whitelisting our sending address, casey@shesabeast.co, if your preferred format is to read our newsletters in your email inbox. Emails are bound to not arrive occasionally if you don't whitelist, which is why we very strongly recommend doing so to our sending address, which is, again, casey@shesabeast.co (if you don't use Gmail, google "whitelist [your email provider]").

Before requesting support, please check your Spam and Promotions folders first. (I do not do either spam or promotions, but newsletters sometimes get flagged/categorized based on the way they are sent en masse.)

Next, please check in your Account settings on the homepage that you have email delivery switched on for the newsletters you wish to receive. If you click the 'Account' button and click 'Manage' next to 'Emails', it should look like the below, with some or all of the buttons switched on:

If it looks like this:

Hopefully it is clear why you have not been receiving any emails.

If you are certain there is no trace of the emails in your inbox in those folders or any other folder, AND that you have not turned off receiving emails in your Account settings, email me at support@shesabeast.co.

Bear in mind also that you can always access all posts on the website itself; there is very little that happens in email that is not replicated on the site. If you missed an email here or there, you will still be able to read any post in question on the website. Please note that the free edition arrives weekly midday on Fridays, with some exceptions for time off; I am a human woman, not a machine.

Where is the Discord/"the Liftcord"?

The Liftcord (our community's affectionate name for its Discord server) is reserved for paying subscribers of the newsletter of the Beasties and Founder tiers. They may access it, and other benefits, via links on the paid subscriber resources page (which is itself linked at the bottom of the website).

What is Discord?

It's sort of a like a big chatroom where people can talk with other members in rooms ("channels") sorted by topic. We have a LIFTOFF support channel; a big sporting events channel; channels for sharing clothing, books, and equipment recommendations; channels for sharing food/snacking/tracking tips; and a bunch more. If you've used Slack, Campfire, IRC, or Microsoft Teams before, Discord is a lot like those (though more modern/with better tools/with more flexibility, as the case may be).

I don't know how to use Discord!

There are three guides linked for first-time Discord users on the paid subscriber resources page.

If Discord is not your thing but you wish to be involved in our community, the comments on my Instagram @swolewoman and the newsletter's Twitter, @She_sABeast, are the next best option.

This can happen for a few reasons, but the most commons ones are (a) you are already in too many Discords (the limit is 100 per user) or (b) your app needs to be updated. See if you have any available updates for your Discord app, and then try using the invite link again. If you are sure neither of these cases are true and you're still having issues, email me at support@shesabeast.co and I will do my best to help you.

Where are my other paid subscriber benefits, such as the merch or LIFTOFF discount codes?

They are duly catalogued on the paid subscriber resources page.
